Urgent Needs of 8 North Texas Nonprofits During COVID-19
Nonprofits need our support now more than ever. We’re helping spread the word about the most urgent needs of our nonprofit clients below. Please share any others in the comments of the accompanying Facebook post.
A Wish with Wings
A Wish with Wings grants magical wishes for young Texans with life-threatening medical conditions. They’ve had to indefinitely delay the fundraising event that accounts for one-third of their annual operating budget. Sixty-one children are waiting – children who have already endured more than enough stress and uncertainty for a lifetime. Even the smallest donation makes a difference.
CASA of Johnson County
Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) are volunteers who represent abused and neglected children in court. Amidst an overburdened Child Protective Services, these volunteers are the ones who really get to know each child and recommend the best way the courts can help. The need is even greater now, with domestic abuse rising during “stay at home” restrictions.
- Learn about volunteering. CASA always has an urgent need for volunteers (about 80 children are waiting); you can train online.
- Make a donation. One of CASA’s main fundraising events, a sporting clay shoot, has been postponed; you can still donate online.
Cook Children’s Health Care System
Cook Children's is facing the challenges all medical organizations are facing right now – plus an influx of child abuse cases, including two child deaths in recent weeks. “Stay at home” restrictions unfortunately heighten stress and risk of abuse, while lowering the chances that abuse will be reported. You can help by sharing these parent support tips via social media.
Fort Worth Food + Wine Foundation
While the foundation normally funds grants and scholarships, they are currently providing emergency assistance to employees of restaurants and bars with food service who are impacted by the recent COVID-19 crisis that limits available work in our community.
Humane Society of North Texas
More people are surrendering animals to shelters, yet fewer are adopting right now, so HSNT shelters are overflowing. Three ways you can help:
- Make a donation. More pets mean increased needs for food, medicine and more.
- Foster a pet. Keep a pet at your home for a few weeks (they can keep you company while you work from home).
- Adopt a pet. The biggest way you can help! All adoption fees are waived for now (except for equine and livestock). Note that adoptions are by appointment only.
Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth
The museum is delaying fundraising efforts to defer support to more urgent nonprofits. But you can stay connected to The Modern and their digital programming by following them on social media.
Presbyterian Night Shelter
For those in our community experiencing homelessness, “stay at home” restrictions are impossible and social distancing is difficult. Meeting the needs of these people while following local guidelines is causing costs to skyrocket for the shelter.
The Women’s Center of Tarrant County
The Women’s Center offers services and counseling for men, women and children who are victims of sexual assault and other violence. Though their physical location is currently closed, they still need funding to operate their 24-hour Rape Crisis and Victim Services Hotline. One of their main fundraising events, the 24th Annual Victory Over Violence 5K Walk/Run, is still happening – but runners will now connect virtually.
